International corporations that want to intimidate countries have access to a private legal system designed just for them. And to unlock its power, sometimes all it takes is a threat.
Why would anyone vote to allow foreign companies to be able to sue them in a special court outside of your country’s judicial system if you pass any laws or regulations that might hurt the potential “profits” of those companies.
You wouldn’t vote for that, unless corporations ran your government.
Well Canada and the EU just signed such a deal today, called CETA. They call it “free trade.” But it’s merely a way for corporations to glass democracy.
