Speaking to The Thom Hartmann Program, Carter explained that the 2010 Citizens United Supreme Court changed the whole political landscape in the United States.

“It violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system. Now it’s just an oligarchy, with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president.”

Jimmy Carter added that the problem applies to our Congress as well.

“So now we’ve just seen a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors, who want and expect and sometimes get favors for themselves after the election’s over.”

What Jimmy Carter is basing his argument on is a recent research report at Princeton and Northwestern Universities that found that the general public has “near zero” influence on Government politics whereas Corporations and Special Interests have 45% success in passing laws and 82% success in preventing laws they don’t like.
