Chancellor Angela Merkel told Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Monday that Germany vehemently opposes the reinstatement of the death penalty in Turkey and that such a step would prevent Turkey becoming an EU member, a German government spokeswoman said.
It will be interesting to see how this situation plays out in Turkey over the next few days. Erdogan seems to want to implement the death penalty on those who were involved in the military coup, and a lot of the Turkish people want the same. However, will he risk the opportunity for his country to be accepted into the European Union? I sincerely doubt it.
