Elite media scorn for anti-establishment movements only vindicates their animating drives.
THE DECISION BY UK VOTERS to leave the EU is such a glaring repudiation of the wisdom and relevance of elite political and media institutions that – for once – their failures have become a prominent part of the storyline. Media reaction to the Brexit vote falls into two general categories: (1) earnest, candid attempts to understand what motivated voters to make this choice, even if that means indicting one’s own establishment circles, and (2) petulant, self-serving, simple-minded attacks on disobedient pro-leave voters for being primitive, xenophobic bigots (and stupid to boot), all to evade any reckoning with their own responsibility. Virtually every reaction that falls into the former category emphasizes the profound failures of western establishment factions; these institutions have spawned pervasive misery and inequality, only to spew condescending scorn at their victims when they object.
Finally, a well written article that explains the true motivation and driving force behind the Brexit, that, no, it’s not a simplistic “xenophobic, racist, anti-immigrant” vote winning, but actually a reflection of the failure of our elite institutions, like the EU, and the people finally reacting to those failures. Plus, it shows the failure of our media in framing the argument in such simplistic terms, thus exposing themselves as being part of the elite institutions, too.
Such a great read, and refreshing. If you’re tired of reading about how democracy has failed and the idiots are taking over, read this article to see how, even that sentiment is exactly what the powers-that-be want you to believe, so that they can hold on to their power, while blaming us, the ordinary people, for their massive failures. And, us, “the intelligent ones” end up falling right in line with those misbeliefs.
