Those who most loudly denounce Fake News are typically those most aggressively disseminating it.
Great article. Shows the true danger of trying to label certain news as “Fake News” and whose really behind this whole “fake news” discussion.
As the article states:
That journalists and “experts” outright lied to the public this way in order to help their favorite candidate is obviously dangerous. This was most powerfully pointed out – ironically – by Marty Baron, Executive Editor of the Washington Post, who told The New York Times’ Jim Rutenberg: “If you have a society where people can’t agree on basic facts, how do you have a functioning democracy?”
Exactly: if you have prominent journalists telling the public to trust an anonymous group with a false McCarthyite blacklist, or telling it to ignore informative documents on the grounds that they are fake when there is zero reason to believe that they are fake, that is a direct threat to democracy. In the case of the Podesta emails, these lies were perpetrated by the very factions that have taken to most loudly victimizing themselves over the spread of Fake News.
We, as a democratic society, need to be very careful with this whole “fake news” hysteria, as it may send us down a path that may be difficult to get us out of in the future.
Imagine if, leading up the the Iraq war, certain news outlets tried to report that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, but the government, not wanting to hear that, marked those sites as “fake news” sites, thus triggering Google’s and Facebook’s algorithms, to remove them from search and peoples’ news feeds. The public would be completely shielded from any dissenting news and would blindly go along with what the government told them, which ultimately did turn out to be a lie.
In a way, this IS what happened, as the news media completely fell in line with the government propaganda. Social media was not as strong as it was back then, so there were very few dissenting voices, this that dissented were quickly discredited by the government, and years later and millions of deaths, we are still involved with wars in the Middle East that all came about because our news media did not do its job of questioning our government.
This “fake news” hysteria will result in exactly the same thing happening. It’s the government’s way of holding on to its power to disseminate its own propaganda. And we’re all falling for it again.
